Meningitis B (MenB) Vaccination in 2026: Protecting Babies, Teens, and Students

Meningococcal group B (MenB) is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis and life-threatening septicaemia (blood poisoning) in children and young adults across the United Kingdom.

Because MenB progresses aggressively within 24 hours from mild flu-like symptoms to critical organ failure, immunisation with the Bexsero vaccine is widely recognised by healthcare professionals as the most potent safeguard against invasive meningococcal disease.

The 2026 NHS MenB Programme

In the UK, the routine NHS childhood immunisation schedule provides free MenB (Bexsero) vaccinations to infants at:

  • 8 weeks old (First primary dose)
  • 16 weeks old (Second primary dose)
  • 12 months old (Booster dose)

This publicly funded programme has achieved remarkable success in driving down infection rates in toddlers. However, it leaves a significant protection gap for older children and young people.

The Protection Gap: Why Adolescents & University Students Need Protection

The routine NHS programme does not cover children born before May 2015, nor does it routinely vaccinate teenagers and young adults unless they suffer from specific clinical conditions like asplenia or complement deficiencies.

Adolescents and university students—especially freshers living in halls of residence or shared student accommodation—represent the second highest risk demographic for MenB:

  • Carriage and Transmission: Roughly 1 in 4 adolescents carry meningococcal bacteria asymptomatically in the back of their throat, transmitting the organism via coughing, sneezing, and intimate contact.
  • Close Living Environments: Communal kitchens, shared dorms, and crowded campus venues dramatically amplify transmission rates.
  • Confusing Symptoms: Early signs (fever, headache, lethargy) mimic common student hangovers or freshers' flu, delaying urgent emergency medical attention.
While UK students routinely receive the MenACWY vaccine in school (Year 9 or 10), MenACWY does NOT protect against Meningitis B. Bexsero is a separate, dedicated vaccine required for complete protection.
