Who is Eligible for the Free NHS Flu Jab? (2026/27 Guidance)

Who Qualifies for the Free NHS Seasonal Flu Vaccination?

Every autumn and winter, seasonal influenza circulates widely across the United Kingdom. While flu can be an unpleasant illness for anyone, it poses serious medical hazards for seniors, very young children, and people with ongoing clinical conditions.

Under NHS England guidelines, community pharmacies provide free NHS flu vaccinations to protect vulnerable patient cohorts, curb hospital admissions, and reduce winter pressures across the NHS.

The NHS flu jab programme is funded directly by NHS England. If you belong to one of the qualifying cohorts detailed below, your vaccination is completely free of charge. No GP referral is required—you can simply walk in or book an appointment at our pharmacy.

Eligible NHS Patient Cohorts for 2026/27

You qualify for a free NHS flu jab if you meet any of the following clinical or age criteria:

  • Adults aged 65 and over: Including anyone who turns 65 on or before 31 March of the current vaccination season.
  • Individuals aged 18 to 64 with qualifying long-term health conditions:
  • Respiratory disease: Severe asthma requiring regular steroid inhalers or oral steroids, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, or cystic fibrosis.
  • Chronic heart disease: Congenital heart conditions, hypertension with cardiac complications, heart failure, or history of myocardial infarction.
  • Chronic kidney disease: Stage 3, 4, or 5 CKD, nephrotic syndrome, or kidney transplantation.
  • Chronic liver disease: Cirrhosis, biliary atresia, or chronic hepatitis.
  • Chronic neurological disease: Stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease, cerebral palsy, or severe learning disabilities.
  • Diabetes and adrenal conditions: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes requiring medication, or Addison's disease.
  • Immunosuppression: Weakened immune system due to chemotherapy, radiotherapy, organ transplant, HIV/AIDS, or long-term systemic steroid therapy.
  • Asplenia or splenic dysfunction: Having had your spleen removed or suffering from sickle cell anaemia or coeliac disease causing functional hyposplenism.
  • Morbid obesity: Adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above.
  • Pregnant individuals: At any stage of pregnancy (first, second, or third trimester), protecting both mother and developing newborn.
  • People living in long-stay residential care homes: Or other long-stay care facilities.
  • Registered carers: Anyone receiving Carer's Allowance, or the primary unpaid carer for an elderly or disabled individual whose welfare would be at risk if the carer fell ill.
  • Close contacts of immunocompromised individuals: Household members living with someone who has severe immunosuppression.
  • Frontline health and social care workers: Employed in registered residential care/nursing homes or domiciliary care providers.

What if I Am Not Eligible for a Free NHS Jab?

If you do not meet the NHS criteria—for example, healthy working adults aged 18 to 64—you can still receive full quadrivalent flu protection through our Private Walk-in Flu Vaccination Clinic.

Our private flu jab service is competitively priced, requires no GP registration, and can be administered during the same short 10-minute consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to register with a GP practice to get vaccinated at the pharmacy?

You do not need to register with a new doctor. When you receive your flu jab at our pharmacy, we automatically send an electronic notification to your registered GP surgery so your official NHS summary care record stays completely updated.

Can I get my flu vaccination and COVID booster at the same time?

Yes! Co-administration of the seasonal flu jab and the COVID-19 autumn booster is safe, effective, and clinically recommended. Both vaccines can be given during a single appointment, usually in separate arms.

How early should I get vaccinated?

The ideal window is between September and November, before flu viruses begin circulating widely. However, vaccination remains beneficial throughout December, January, and February.
